OUR MINISTRIES

We Welcome Everyone

How We Serve in the Philadelphia Region

FOCUS Philadelphia offers a weekly meal services in Norristown PA at The Upper Room located at 201 Swede Street.

Meal service begins at 7:00 p.m. immediately after an opening prayer to bless the food, the hands that prepared the meal and our brothers and sisters in Christ who are recipients of the meal.

We also offer a Thursday evening meal service in Philadelphia’s Aviator Park located directly across from the entrance to The Franklin Institute. Meal service begins at 8:00 P.M. again, preceded by an opening prayer.

Meals include a hot, protein dense entrée (chili, meatballs, grilled chicken, etc), meat and cheese sandwiches, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (for vegans) fresh fruit, snack and hard boiled eggs. In the Orthodox Church, eggs serve as a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice to us and symbolize new life. Just like Jesus emerged from the sealed tomb, we crack eggs to signify new life and Jesus’ victory over death. Eggs also offer a durable and portable protein source for our clients. We also include bottled water and remind our clients to stay hydrated. Each meal is handed out with a “God bless you” from our servers. This serves as a reminder that we are simply servants of The Lord and helping His children.

Our Hopes for the Future

Our ministry is committed to understanding and addressing the needs of our neighbors and those that we serve. Our goals are to:

  1. grow our volunteer base and share the blessing of service with other Orthodox Christians
  2. increase our meal services in order to serve a broader area and backfill with meals that are not available from other resources
  3. use the FOCUS Philadelphia Center at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church as a potential food pantry and clothes closet
  4. offer counseling services to our clients during our “street ministry” on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
